Authorities in Badung Regency, Bali, have convened to explore the potential for creating tourist villages in the Canggu district. They note Canggu’s rapid tourism expansion over the past seven years and a desire to maintain the area’s cultural and scenic integrity.

Former Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika has suggested officially designating Canggu’s Traditional Village as a tourism village to enhance its management. He believes this change would enable the village council to secure more resources to preserve its cultural and natural landscapes.

Pastika was accompanied by I Wayan Suarsana, Head of the Canggu Traditional Village, and Ni Kadek Dwi Indah Paramita, Director of the Baga Utsaha Padruwen Traditional Village. Pastika recognized the significant advantages brought by Canggu’s transformation into a key tourist destination, but he emphasized the need for further enhancements to ensure sustainability and improve the living conditions of local inhabitants.

According to Pastika, “The province owns significant assets. Proper management of these assets can considerably enrich the province. My hope is for the provincial government to generate substantial revenue through this management.”

Pastika specifically mentioned the importance of preserving the rice fields around Canggu, which contribute to food production and counterbalance to tourism-focused developments.

Ni Kadek Dwi Indah Paramita reported that since its establishment in 2022, BUPDA Traditional Village has accrued profits of IDR 1.9 billion from local enterprises, such as shops and beach vendors, which have contributed through village taxes.

Waste management was also discussed, with Suarsana noting the identification of potential land for a major waste processing site and local communities’ efforts to start a waste bank.

“We have entrepreneurs eager to aid in waste processing to pilot Canggu as a model area. However, securing suitable land remains a challenge, and we are looking to utilize land owned by the Bali Provincial Government,” Suarsana explained.

Furthermore, Suarsana revealed that the Village Credit Institution (LPD) of Canggu, comprising seven local hamlets and 1,200 families, has assets of IDR 750 million in the bank and generates approximately IDR 7 billion annually.

“Our goal is for the traditional village to achieve an annual income of IDR 10 billion, enabling us to acquire and manage assets that will boost the economic well-being of our residents,” he added.

Canggu’s evolution from a quiet fishing village to a vibrant tourism hotspot featuring the world’s largest beach club, Atlas Beach Club, reflects its significant transformation. As Bali continues its quest for sustainable and culturally sensitive tourism practices in 2024 and beyond, the challenge remains in balancing development with environmental and cultural preservation. Despite these challenges, Canggu remains a top destination for those seeking a luxurious beachside experience.
